Members of a youth video group, Sine Patriyotiko (SIPAT) , bagged the Grand Prize and 2nd Place in the “Make Talk Work Second International Video Competition” organized by the City University of New York Dispute Resolution Consortium (CUNY DRC) last May 22, 2009.
Emil James Mijares together with other SIPAT members bested filmmakers from 9 other countries including USA, Germany, Canada and China with a short video entitled “Apologies”. They made use of creative visual images and powerful symbolisms to effectively convey how spiteful words aggravate conflicts within the family and community.
Meanwhile Janice Atencio and Sinag de Jesus won 2nd place in the adult category of the same competition. Their entry “Use Nice Words” utilized advanced special effects to communicate their message of peaceful conflict resolution.
The competition seeks to increase public awareness about dispute
resolution through the use of short videos featuring themes from CUNY DRC’s Make Talk Work Bookmarks.
By creating inspiring short videos featuring topics concerning people around the world, these young filmmakers not only expressed their views on burning issues of the day but also lent their talents in bringing about much needed change.
This is the first time the filmmakers entered an international competition but they have already produced a number of award-winning video documentaries, animations, and short narratives through SIPAT.
